Anne Conway Closing Argument

Anne Conway should be added to the syllabus next year and in the philosophical canon because she is one of the first few female philosophers to have a substantial impact. During the 1600s, women were unable to receive formal education. Despite her gender, Conway found a way to educate herself and produce work that was read widely by the philosophical community. Anne Conway published her work anonymously; no one would read “The Principles of the Most Ancient and Modern Philosophy” if they knew the author was female. She intended to introduce new theories to the discussion and challenge other ideas by philosophers such as Descartes, Spinoza, and More. Female philosophers are not often taught in the current school system since they were never given a platform. To provide an unbiased education, schools must teach more from female philosophers like Anne Conway. Separate from her representation as a female philosopher, Conway states many compelling objections to Descartes’s substance dualism, a famously known and often debated theory. Her objections were a catalyst for different ideas on the definition of substance and the Body/Soul complex.
