The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy gives an in-depth description of Jeremy Bentham’s life, philosophical views, and his take on politics and economy as well. This article goes through his important theories such as; utilitarianism, legal theory, and hedonism. Bentham was a lawyer who spent his life developing political, economic, and philosophical claims that all intertwined and ultimately led to him becoming a famous name in academia.

  1. Sweet, William. “Jeremy Bentham (1784-1832).” Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy, https://iep.utm.edu/jeremy-bentham/

This source goes into detail about Bentham’s various contributions to philosophy, namely, his Utilitarianism, his legal theories which advocated for legal reform, and his views on human nature. He believed that pain and pleasure were the governing forces in nature (hedonism) and an action should be judged based on its consequences. Aside from his work in moral philosophy, he spent a lot of his life on political philosophy and more specifically philosophy of law.

  1. West, Henry R. “Utilitarianism.” Encyclopædia Britannica, Encyclopædia Britannica, Inc., 26 July 1999, https://www.britannica.com/topic/utilitarianism-philosophy.

This source is about Bentham’s contribution to Utilitarianism. It connects his theory that an action is morally right if it produces the greatest amount of utility (specifically happiness for Bentham), to his contemporaries and other forms of this view. It also includes a great deal of information about John Stuart Mill who was the other ‘father of utilitarianism’ alongside Bentham.
