I believe Madeleine de Scudery would be a great addition to next year’s syllabus because it would be refreshing to see more women philosophers. Also, her opposition to Descartes would make for an excellent class discussion. Through learning about de Scudery and her work, I appreciate her attitude toward gender and feminism and believe it is an asset to the philosophical canon. Scudery’s view of love and friendship is also something that is of interest because of her breakdown of the elements of public and private spheres. Her interaction with other great thinkers and philosophers of the time is an additional asset in terms of contrasting and comparing views during that period.
