Closing Argument

It is difficult to overstate the impact Adam Smith’s writings have had. The ideas shared in The Wealth of Nations birthed a field of study, economics, that has gone far beyond academia, having influence over government policy. Despite being the dubbed “Father of Economics” for his study and support of capitalism, Smith was not the unreserved supporter of the system he is often portrayed to be. As a moral philosopher Smith was able to study economic systems with a focus on their moral implications. He acknowledged and grappled with the negative effects of capitalism as much as he lauded its benefits. Smith clearly has a place in the philosophical canon, not only for his direct contributions to the study of economics, but also for the nuanced moral arguments he makes for and against certain systems.
