Walter Charleton: Closing Statement

Walter Charleton and his importance in showing the outskirts of what a philosopher can be. A Philosopher can be a polymath in all aspects of the definition. I think seeing a philosopher who goes in a different direction such as researching Stonehenge along with his other writings is very important for people to see. His diverse aspirations and research are why he should be in the philosophical canon. He is a living testament to going outside of one’s comfort zone and being outside of a stereotype. This is why he should be on the syllabus next year. Because I think he can be so relatable to many college students who have great aspirations. And that we can learn from him that it is good to be diverse in what we do in life and that we do not have to just stick to one aspect of our character or desires. He should be in the philosophical canon because of his writings on a variety of topics, including medicine, physics, chemistry, astronomy, and mathematics, and is considered one of the founders of the Royal Society. One of his most popular influences of that of bringing Epicureanism to England. His influence on the development of modern science and philosophy cannot be overstated. He deserves a place in the philosophical canon not only for his contributions to science and philosophy but also for his commitment to educating the public about the importance of scientific thought and inquiry.  His works are still studied and discussed today, and his ideas remain relevant to the development of modern philosophy.
