He starts with a clear metaphysical claim: the world has real mathematical order, and that order comes from God, and then asks for causal stories that match that order.

He treats mathematics as the structure for his theory, not just merely a tool. Ratios and proportions are part of what things are. He tests his first theory with data, and when data denies his theory, he changes the model. Like when he was determining the orbit of the earth, he first proposed the circular orbit, but later data disproves this, so he changed the circular assumption into an ellipse. He keeps the core idea of harmony and drops the bad theories that do not meet harmony.

He gives beauty from simplicity a role, rather than merely an aesthetic standard. Simple form within the theory can be a guide for the search. However, beauty itself cannot be the proof; beauty must be in line with real evidence and beauty can only be an assistant, but no decisive argument. This methodology reflects his rationality and logic.

Kepler deserves the canon because his method gives a clear template for truth-seeking. He unites God, number, and nature in one testable view. This rational mix of principle, cause, simplicity, and revision sets a standard that later philosophy can use.

Why Kepler fits this course

He gives a clean contrast to later figures. You can set his harmony next to Newton’s law; you can test realism against mere prediction; you can propose questions about when beauty helps and when it misleads; you can track how a metaphysical view as a cornerstone can shape a method without blocking revision.

His texts are good for close reading. The arguments are bold and plain; the claims invite objections and replies; the steps from idea to test are visible.

Kepler also connects units across the syllabus. He speaks to Descartes and Newton on method and law. By that , he gives a bridge from medieval themes to modern science.

Why Kepler is a good choice for students

He teaches writing and argument: through his crisp claims, logical and stackable proofs, and his transparent and traceable process, students can practice concise claims, clear reasons, and a logical train of thought.

He teaches integration. He shows how theology, metaphysics, and science can sit together, and how values like simplicity and unity can guide work and still yield to proof.

Kepler’s Method (why he deserves to be in the canon) Kepler builds a philosophical method for science.
