Catharine Trotter Cockburn – Closing Argument

Catharine Trotter Cockburn provides an interesting addition to the overarching themes of the course, mainly in regards to the existence of God. However, she provides an interesting contrast to some of the other views, such as Spinoza, because she does not believe that God necessarily willed everything. She believes that God saw what already would be best and gave that the force of law. While the nuance is very detailed it leaves us with an interesting other perspective. Cockburn’s religious views are also very interesting because she oscillated between protestantism and catholicism throughout her life, perhaps playing into her views of God. Ultimately, Cockburn would be an interesting voice to add to the syllabus because of her ideological interaction with Clarke and Locke. Her focus on the ideas of morality would be a great addition as well because they go hand in hand with the debate of God and human knowledge, but we did not touch on much this semester.

Thank You!
