What are common themes that we see when we study philosophers? We see hearty dialogue and disagreement, unwaveringly strong opinions… and controversy.
Hugo Grotius was a controversial philosopher during his life–and he certainly paid the price for it then–but considering his incredible contributions to philosophy, he deserves to be honored. His strong sense of justice was the thread running through all of his philosophy, and his influence can be seen in many pieces of political philosophy, legal arguments, and more.

In much of philosophy, you will see writers flip-flop between ideas throughout their arguments. Though it is sometimes for rhetorical reasons, it can also be frustrating. Not Hugo Grotius. Grotius maintained a desire for freedom, justice, and equality in every topic he wrote about, from overseas trade to war to human rights. Who would not want to learn about someone like that?
Grotius risked his life for his beliefs, and he was strong in his convictions. Controversial? Yes. Wise and just? Yes. An advocate for tolerance and equality? Absolutely.
Perhaps now more than ever, Hugo Grotius (and his message) feel appropriate.
