John Toland Final Arguments

I believe that John Toland deserves a spot on the syllabus next year, and has a place in philosophical cannon. John Toland’s arguments start similar to Locke’s but go much further in their radicalism, and late in life he could easily be compared to Cavendish with his belief in self moving matter, or Spinoza with the belief in Nature being God. The last reason I think he deserves his place is because he is a philosopher that directly challenged the church. Unlike other philosophers that sometimes stepped around the issue, Toland’s writings clearly challenged how much authority the church should really have and the authenticity of many of the works and beliefs that the church claimed were divine revelation. So I think he would also be a very interesting philosopher to discuss in class.
