Kathleen Wellman offers an intellectual biography of La Mettrie and explains the medical component of La Mettrie’s philosophy. I will use this account to explain the medicinal motivation behind La Mettrie’s extreme materialistic views. I hope this publication can help expand my view of La Mettrie not just as a philosopher, but a scientific researcher and physicist as well.
Blair Campbell argues that La Mettrie should be seen as a philosophe who sought to solve social and ethical problems using scientific ideas. Campbell tracks La Mettrie’s belief of what guides mankind is life, using several of his publications throughout his life. This article helps narrate his change in life views and will guide me as I approach his readings, specifically “Man A Machine” and “The Wisdom of Pleasures: “the School of Voluptuousness” and “the Art of Enjoyment”.
Marco Piazza focuses on La Mettrie’s view on the morality of punishment in society and how his thoughts were echoed decades later by Nietzsche. Their shared view on determinism and how morality in society functions is fascinating because La Mettrie’s thoughts were regarded harshly by philosophes in his time due to his materialist view of life. I will use this article to explore how the determinism aspect of La Mettrie’s works evolve over time and his influences on future philosophers.

This article helps paraphrase La Mettrie’s Man a Machine and put his words into a contemporary context. This is very helpful in aiding me to understand some of La Mettrie’s more complex topics. I will use this to help me organize La Mettrie’s thoughts and connect them to contemporary thinking.
Uzgalis, William. “John Locke > Some Issues in Locke’s Philosophy of Mind (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy).” Stanford.edu, 2015, plato.stanford.edu/entries/locke/supplement.html.
This website helps outline the areas of controversy in Locke’s philosophy concerning the mind and the body. I will use this to compare Locke’s Cartesian Dualistic beliefs to La Mettrie’s materialistic ideas. This will be helpful for analyzing the extent to which Locke is a dualist and the potential argument that Locke could be see as a materialist.
