Cutler, F. (1999). Jeremy Bentham and the Public Opinion Tribunal. The Public Opinion Quarterly, 63(3), 321–346. JSTOR. https://doi.org/10.2307/2991711

Fred Cutler in this paper describes Bentham’s idea of the “Public Opinion Tribunal”. This tribunal is an unofficial body, that acts as the most important check on government power by constantly judging the actions of officials to prevent misrule. Culter explains that while Bentham’s ideas are advanced for the time, they fail when examined in modern day.

Rawls, J. (1971). A Theory of Justice. Harvard University Press.

John Rawls’ A Theory of Justice is one of the most important works of modern political philosophy that proposes a theory of justice as fairness. He introduces a thought experiment called the original position, where individuals choose principles of justice from behind a veil of ignorance, unaware of their own social status or natural abilities. Rawls uses his theory to specifically show the failures of utilitarianism and the concepts put forth by Bentham.
